Architectural Design IV

Module Coordinator : Mr Nazmi Anuar

Tutor : Mr Nazmi Anuar

The module themed engaging environment and community. It explores design by harnessing environmental qualities and conditions for human and environment sustainability through a project with a specific community of users within a given context. The projects involve studies of precedence on design projects that are responsive to the environmental conditions and sustainable issues. Considerations should be given to the complexity of the program, site topography and vegetation, socio cultural events, and variety of passive strategies for sustainable design. The design work should contribute to and merge harmoniously with the environment and the site and provide the best of experiences for the community of users.

March 2022 - July 2022

Pattern Making
Revealing and Reweaving Patterns

The key to this urban farm is the visible connection between those working there and the USJ neighborhood. It forms a bond between the two, allowing them to share a common space. This urban farm recognises the repetitive pattern that was seen in the previous site enhancing it further, complimenting its surrounding.

Project Site

The urban farm is located in USJ 18, 20 kilometers away from the hustling and bustling city center, Kuala Lumpur. It's neighborhood park setting offers the users a fair flat site for urban farming purposes. It is a non governmental organization to provide job opportunities for the specially-aided children.

Design Study

The design started with site impression through collages. Patterns of the plantation, metal works has caught my intention. Site issues were identified later on to be considered in the masterplan.

Site Issues

A numbers of site issues were identified like security issues, carpark, connectivity to the park etc. The issues were then translated to diagrams with respective responses that has to be included in the masterplan.

We have also looked into the types of planting that are available in P3KU by learning the plants, condition required and the time of growth. This aids in segregating areas for different type of planting systems in the masterplan.

Concept

The extraction of concept starts with realizing patterns of the site and also existing tree pattern as well as human behaviour movement. This masterplan concept recognises the repetitive pattern that was seen in the previous site enhancing it further, complimenting its surrounding.

Physical Model

Project 1: Site Analysis and Master Plan

Group Work

We are to develop an understanding of the context for intervention. In assigned tutorial groups, students will conduct site visit to identify the physical as well as the intangible qualities that shape the character of the site. Engagement with site users will establish the needs of the community at site. As the Design Response of the Site Analysis stage, students will work with their tutorial group to draw up a new plan for the demarcated site area through the design of a Kebun Komuniti Plan.

Project 1B: Architectural Allotment

Group Work

We are to showcase architectural form as a construct of materiality for a proposed set of activities related to the cultivation of plants. The exploration of themes centered around the cultivation of plants together with requirement for seating, shading and storage

Roles in Group work:

  • Group Coordinator for progress and tutorial sessions

  • Design Lead

  • Orthographic Drawings and Diagrams

  • Designing Presentation Boards

Afloat

Afloat is a hydroponic structure allotment that uses vertical towers as growing system that turns into architecture, the system is created to be a sustainable and environmentally-friendly as nothing goes out of the cycle. It is efficient and space-saving ,and produce high yields in a small footprint. The allotment  provides not only a source of fresh and healthy food but spaces for learning, resting, and storage for its users.

The graph shows the relation of maintenance against time for hydroponic system. It requires labour to plant in seedlings and harvest them when it is ready.

Project 2: P3KU Kebun Komuniti Center

We are required to provide full design proposals incorporating findings from site analysis and precedent studies. It will lead to generating narratives that respond to the environment and community within the given context and explore environmental poetics of building enclosure’s design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilizing various complex typologies of spatial organisations and a variety of passive strategies for sustainable design. The design should contribute to and merge harmoniously with environment and site and provide the best of spatial experiences in fostering a sense of community.

The Farmer's Toolbox

The Community Center is envisioned as a vibrant and sustainable hub nestled within a tropical cityscape. The design narrative explores the intention of embracing the tropical way of living, with the community center acting as the heart of the urban farm.

The architectural concept emphasizes the notion of thresholds, where spaces are designed to create distinct transitions and indications of different functions, fostering a sense of unity and connection within the community.

Project Site

P3KU Urban Farm

The site is located in P3KU Urban Farm. The community center sits on a circular site plot, which aims to connect the plantation area all around the site through circulation and the center as the heart.

Massing Study

The design process starts with massing study. The massing exploration delves into the possibilities of  volumes being expressed in the given plot area. Views, circulations and zonings are a few points that are being considered.

To indicate the transitions between various functional locations and to improve the overall spatial experience, thresholds are carefully incorporated into the design. People pass over different thresholds that mark off sections of the community centre, including the entryway, meeting rooms, educational spaces, and agricultural grounds.

Embracing the Outdoor Living

The architecture seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor areas, embracing outdoor living. With courtyards, terraces, and covered outdoor spaces, inhabitants can take advantage of the tropical weather and create a sense of community while also unwinding and interacting with the environment.

My past semester works were more on boxy, rectangular and axial (if I may to conclude) I decided to challenge myself this semester (with a given circular building plot area) by designing a circular plan. The process was tough, constantly referring to precedence studies and “stealing” essence of people’s project. On top of that, I decided to throw away my love for monochromatic drawings and go all in for colored illustrations to present my project. Although the process is tough but truly enjoyed it and got really immersed into the design process. I wanna thank my tutor Mr Nazmi and my fellow studio mates who encouraged me to break through my barriers. I am not sure what the final result is of this project but one thing that I’m sure is I am really happy with it. Design never stops and challenge will still be accepted. Here comes the final year of architecture degree and here we go!
